Introduction
Written by Matthew Farnell - Revised on January 10, 2003

First of all, let me make it clear that a healthy lifestyle is not the most important thing in life. Making the decision to accept God's gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord is far more important than anything else in life (Romans 6:23). If you haven't made this decision, please visit my church's web site for more information. Living a healthy lifestyle is one of many excellent goals to work towards after becoming a Christian.

Keep in mind that I do not claim to be the "world's expert" in the area of health, and I do not know for sure what the ideal diet is. However, as a Christian, I believe that the original diet for mankind was raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds (Gen. 1:29). On the other hand, I know that since then God has also given us meat for food (Gen. 9:3).

A couple of other things that the Bible teaches are not to despise or judge people who eat differently than ourselves (Rom. 14:3), and to try not to offend others by what we eat (Rom. 14:21). Perhaps it is beneficial these days to follow Dr. Joel Robbins' advice:

"Eat primarily fresh and raw fruits and vegetables, add some whole grains, and leave room for the odd serving of fish or chicken. Reduce the intake of those foods and substances that we all know are not good for us: caffeine, sugar, (some) fats, ..., processed foods, etc."

For animal products, I would encourage wild or home grown animals without the extra fat, hormones, antibiotics, etc. Also, rather than just reducing the intake of those foods and substances that we all know are not good for us, it might be a good idea to totally eliminate such foods from the diet.

Besides diet, a healthy lifestyle includes plenty of exercise, sunshine, fresh air, etc. Because anyone can be wrong (including experts and professionals), I urge you to let the Bible be your final authority in all areas, including health. God alone knows what is best for his creation, and he has given us the Bible as our guide. In his book, What the Bible Says About Healthy Living, Dr. Rex Russel, M.D. says:

"The only infallible guide to healthful living has come from the Creator, who alone knows what is best for His creation."

The Bible teaches that God will give each of us wisdom if we ask Him for it (James 1:5). We can cut out soda pop, candy, and other unhealthy junk foods from our diet, and we can practice a health producing lifestyle with exercise, sunshine, fresh air, etc. There are also many other things which affect health including keeping a clear conscience, controlling anger and stress, smiling, etc.
