Lava Tube Ice Formations

By McFarnell (Matthew Farnell)

Cave Ice FormationsLast month, dad (Charlie) and I were driving around in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. We’d heard there were lots of caves in the area, so we parked and walked around looking for cave entrances. We found several, but didn’t thoroughly explore any of them. However, one of the cave entrance sinks had three tubes going in different directions, and one of these tubes had some very fascinating ice formations near the entrance. They looked like miniature statues!

I’d never seen anything like it, so I was pretty impressed. I took lots of pictures, but the cave was steaming up really bad and a lot of the pictures didn’t turn out very well. I’ve posted the best pictures at http://www.farnellfamily.com/pictures/Spelunking/2005-04_Ice_Formations
