January 2nd, 2004. This igloo is built from snow only. No wire, boards, or other materials. I plan to post updated photos of the igloo as the days go by so you can monitor the melting process. How long do you think it will last? Tuesday I submitted a photo of the igloo to the local paper's online photo album, and then Wednesday two different reporters called up and asked about coming up to check it out. Sounded good to me, but I told them it might be hard to get here with all the snow and ice. A reporter and a photographer came, but they walked from the end of the county road, about a half mile through snow. The article is here. Later I found out that the picture went out through the Associated Press and was in papers across the country. So far, I know it was in the Columbian (Vancouver, WA), the Bellingham Herald (Bellingham, WA), the San Francisco Chronicle (San Francisco, CA), the St. Augustine Record (St. Augustine, FL), and a newspaper in Fort Worth Texas. If you know of any other papers it was in, I'd love to hear from you!

Building site of igloo. Began work at 11 a.m. on January 2nd. Half done at 1:51 p.m. It doesn't look that great, does it? :-( Took a break to help pull out our neighbor's Explorer and to eat lunch. Igloo completed at 6:08 p.m. It gets dark early these days, but I should be able to get a better picture tomorrow. Maybe there will be fresh snow on the ground! Day two, January 3rd - fresh snow on the ground! Day two - we added some snow to the outside. It was pretty warm today, but the next couple days are supposed to be cold.
Day three, January 4th - fresh snow and about 26 degrees. Christina in the entry way - it's pretty small. Christina crawling out. Day four, January 5th - 7 a.m. - pulling out my sleeping bag and other gear after spending the night in the igloo. My thermometer dropped to 20.8 last night, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was actually a couple degrees colder as my thermometer is right by the warm house. It isn't too cold sleeping in an igloo, as long as you have an inflatable sleeping pad or something to keep the cold from the snow on the floor from reaching you. I had my bag all zipped up except for a little hole to breath out of. We're expecting more snow today!
Day five, January 6th. Down below 20 degrees last night! It snowed quite a bit more last night, and it is drifting. Should be turning to sleet and freezing rain soon. This is a picture of the entrance from the inside. Day six, January 7th. Half inch of freezing rain on top. Day seven, January 8th. Even more freezing rain on the igloo. Suzanne and Cocoa inside the igloo. Looks pretty cozy and warm, huh?
Day eight, January 9th. 40 degrees and melting... Day nine, January 10th. Still warm and melting, although I've heard we might get more freezing rain and snow soon. Day eleven, January 12th. Very warm. Starting to see patches of bare ground. Day twelve, January 13th. Starting to see a lot of dirt from the snowballs. Day thirteen, January 14th. Still standing, but a lot of the snow on the ground has melted.
Day fourteen, January 15th. It looks like the igloo is starting to shrink. Day fifteen, January 16th. Part of the entrance tunnel caved in today, and there are a couple of holes that have melted through the top of the igloo (see lower two pictures). Day sixteen, January 17th. Day seventeen, January 18th. The holes in the top are getting bigger (lower picture), but it still hasn't caved in. Day eighteen, January 19th. Today the top finally caved in.
Day nineteen, January 20th. Day twenty, January 21st. Day twenty-one, January 22nd. Day twenty-two, January 23rd. It's raining, but we may get some more snow tomorrow night. Day twenty-three, January 24th. Forecast is for snow down to 500-1000 feet tonight!
Day twenty-four, January 25th. No new snow. Looks like the igloo will be completely melted by tomorrow.
