Heading for the lava flow. Horizontal Tree Mold entrance. There's a pretty big tree growing right in front of it. Matthew looking at formations in the tree cast. Kind of a split level here. Taking pictures of formations. Formation in tree mold.
More formations. Looking out from inside the tree cast. Notice Charlie peeking in. Bark molds in the tree mold. More bark. Even more bark.
More formations in the tree mold. Notice the small detailed formations in the lower left corner. Matthew taking a break from searching for caves. Man, it was hot out there that day. The high temperature was 78-80. Formation in the short 40' lava tube. Formations on the ceiling of the tube.
Another cool formation. More formations. This is the 100' cave. One section of the cave had these flow marks all the way down the center of the tube floor, while the edges were rough lava. This formation looks like it was hanging vertically, but it was actually horizontal. Like two rocks had separated while still hot and left this taffy-type formation. Justin looking at formations.
Ceiling formations. More ceiling formations. This is the long lava tube system. It had various tubes, but they were mostly all either hands-and-knees or belly crawls. We didn't explore the whole system. There are at least two pillars in this cave. Matthew doing the spider crawl. Charlie looking around. Notice all the formations above him.
One of the pillars. Justin making his way down one of the small tubes. Formation hanging from the ceiling. Justin needs to bring gloves next time. This stuff is sharp! Matthew after a long crawl.
Another horizontal tree cast with entrances on both ends. We found a big cave, but it was closed for bats until about 5 days after our trip. Oh well, now we have something to go back for! Another shot of the big cave. Anybody know the name? Trilliums were in bloom. We had a great trip and are looking forward to next time!
