Fire Fighting - Air Fight

| Fighting - Introduction | | Smokejumpers | | Hot Shots | | Volunteers |

Sometimes fires get so big that smokejumpers and or Hot Shots cannot get them under control. This is when the air fight begins. Helicopters and Air Tankers (A type of airplane) fly to the fire to help fight it. The helicopter will probably have a huge bucket under it carrying like 5000 pounds of water to drop on the fire. The Air Tanker will through a red mixture called stagnant on the fire to smother it.

The firefighters still near the fire better watch out because sometimes the water and stagnant mixture being dropped from the sky doesn't land right where they wanted it, too. Infact, sometimes it lands on the firefighters! That's what happened to the guy on the right.

After dropping one load of water and stagnant mixture, the helicopter and air tanker go back for a second load. This way a firefighting is expensive but when fires get out of control they have to be put out some how. Usually when the fire is fought from the air, it is put out pretty fast.
