Volunteer firefighters are who would come to your house if it caught on fire. If anyone was still inside the house when the firefighters got there, someone would go in the burning house to bring the person out to safety. Firefighters have a tool they can use to open locked doors if they need to to get through. They also have masks with clean air flowing into them so they can breath.
When fighting a house fire, firefighters always work together. There is lots to do and they must get it done quickly and safely. They make holes in the roof to let gasses out of the house, they open up places where the fire can hide, they go in the house to get people out, and many other things.
Once the fire has been put out the volunteer firefighters still have work to do. They have lots of clean up work to do before they can even leave the fire site. They have to drain the extra water out of any hoses that were used and then put the hoses back on the fire truck. Then they have to put all of their tools that were used away so that they will be ready when the next fire call comes in. Once the volunteers get back to the fire station they try to get some rest before the next call. Even while they are asleep they are ready to go at a moments notice. They have all their gear right beside their bed so that they can pull it on and go. All firefighters have to be ready to go at all times.
We can help firefighters by making our home easy to get to. Low hanging branches should be trimmed from over your driveway so that the big fire trucks will be able to get through easily. Make sure the way to your house is clearly marked with your name and address so that the firefighters don't have to waste time trying to find your house.
